Employer-Sponsored Australia Job Visa Pathways

Updated: Oct 11, 2019

Moving to Australia might seem like a grueling undertaking, but there are certain visa options that facilitate a completely smooth integration into local job markets and communities. For skilled workers, the path to economic success in Australia can be pursued by obtaining an Australia job visa, which may or may not require a job offer from an Australian employer.

Visas that mandate a valid job offer are known as employer-sponsored visas. While there are multiple streams or sub-categories under each employer-sponsored visa category, workers living outside Australia are more likely to be eligible for the Direct Entry stream.

In order to obtain a job offer, aspirants can seek the assistance of overseas job consultants – who have in-depth knowledge regarding the labor market scenario, job vacancies, and eligibility requirements in Australia; and offer access to employers who are authorized to sponsor overseas workers. There are two employer-sponsored visas administered by the Australian Department of Home Affairs:

Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186)

This visa allows skilled workers, who have been nominated by an Australian employer, to permanently live and work in the country. The employee is expected to work for the nominating employer for at least two years, after which they may explore more lucrative careers Australia has to offer. A Subclass 186 visa application is typically processed within 18-20 months.

Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme Visa (Subclass 187)

This visa allows skilled workers, who have been nominated by an employer in a regional area of Australia, to permanently live and work in the country. The employee is obligated to work for the nominating employer in regional Australia for at least two years. A Subclass 187 visa application is typically processed within 20-24 months.

The processing time for employer-sponsored visas is longer than that of General Skilled Migration visas, which do not require a job offer. However, it is important to consider the fact that moving to Australia with a job offer in hand enhances job security and economic stability. Platforms such as Jobsvisas.com can connect job seekers to overseas employers in Australia; and provide guidance throughout the

application process.
